JA Aozora is an agricultural cooperative which helps promote the activity of farmers in the Kagoshima region. Based in Shibushi, east of Kagoshima and next to Shibushi Bay, it advises and supports farmers in the sale of their products. Agricultural culture in Shibushi began in the Taisho era (from 1912) when the wasteland that constituted the great Shirasu plateau (a plateau formed thanks to a pyroclastic flow in the south of Kyushu and which occupies half of Kagoshima prefecture) was transformed into a fertile arable land. The know-how of the ancestors who made this plateau fertile is also passed on to younger generations through this cooperative. Umami imports kukicha tea from the farmers of JA Aozora, an original tea flavored with yuzu.
