Umami is an importing company of premium Japanese food products.

We select for you, directly from craftsmen, healthy and delicious Japanese products, which are inherited from traditional savoir faire. We want our customers to discover through our company the many Japanese flavors, still quite unknown to Europeans.

OUR TEAM

Jean Béguin, founder of Umami, has always been passionate about Japan. His 5-year experience as a sales director in gourmet products importation and his trip in Japan in 2013 convinced him to start the Umami adventure.

Laure Béguin, a gastronomy enthusiast, has been interested in his brother's project since the beginning and decided to join him as a partner. She brought her skills in graphic design, marketing and web, to create the brand identity and its communication strategy. 

Yoko Kambea Japanese living in France and Raphaël Berrhoun, a Frenchman who speaks Japanese, also joined the project, convinced of the potential of Umami. They brought their knowledge of the Japanese market and their skills in International trade. 

Today, thanks to the diversity of each of us, Umami is a strong and complementary team.

WHY THE NAME UMAMI

Umami is one of the five basic tastes, after sweet, salty, sour and bitter. In Japanese, Umami means  “savory taste”. 

Umami upgrades the flavor of a lot of ingredients and works as a natural flavor enhancer. Umami is a deep flavor, with a sweet and lasting aftertaste. Its deep, long lasting and round taste increases salivation and wraps the tongue with a fur sensation that stimulates the throat and the palate.

Umami can be found in ripe tomatoes, parmesan cheese, soy sauce, fish, shellfish, matcha green tea, seaweeds or mushrooms but especially in broth, such as dashi broth, one of the daily basics broths in Japanese cooking.

We chose to name our company Umami, because this term evokes quality and good taste. We want to democratize this 5th flavor in Europe. We are convinced that umami allows healthy and tasty cooking, based on quality and not on quantity.
