Umami is an import company of high quality Japanese food products

We select for you, directly from the craftspersons, tasty and healthy products, inherited from a traditional know-how.

We wish to let you discover the multiplicity of Japanese flavors, which are still not well understood by the Western world.

THE TEAM

Jean Béguin, founder of Umami, has always been passionate about Japan. With 5 years of experience as a sales manager in the importation of food products, his trip to Japan in 2013 convinced him to take the plunge in creating Umami.

Laure Béguin, passionate about gastronomy, has been interested in this project from the start and chose to partner with him. She brings her skills in the fields of graphic design, marketing, and the web to bring the brand’s universe to life and carry its communication strategy.

Yoko Kambe, a Japanese living in France and Raphaël Berrhoun, a Frenchman with fluent Japanese, decided to join the project, convinced by Umami potential. They both bring their knowledge of the Japanese market and their skills in international trade.

Today, thanks to everybody’s skills diversity, Umami is established as a strong and complementary team.

WHY UMAMI

Umami is the fifth flavor with sweet, salty, sour and bitter. In Japanese, umami means “delicious taste”.

Umami elevates the flavors of a wide variety of food with its taste enhancer capacity. It has a deep and tasty aftertaste. It envelops the palate and the top of the tongue with silky softness and roundness.

This flavor can be found in ripe tomatoes, parmesan cheese, soy, fish, shellfish, matcha, seaweeds, mushrooms, even broths, notably dashi broth, one of Japanese cuisine's cornerstones.

We decided to call our society Umami because this term is evocative of high quality and good taste. We wish to democratize this fifth flavor notion for the sake of our European palates. We are convinced that the umami flavor allows for a healthy and tasty cuisine based on quality over quantity.

Our products can be found on the tables of the greatest chefs, in gourmet "bistronomiques" restaurants, on the internet for individual customers.
