Shichimi

Shichimi, a blend of seven spices (“shichi” meaning seven, “mi” meaning flavor), is a Japanese condiment renowned for its benefits and unique taste. Invented in the 17th century in Edo by herbalists seeking a healthy chili-based seasoning, it was originally sold as a remedy in front of temples before becoming a travel souvenir and gaining popularity. Despite the generally mild Japanese culinary tradition, shichimi has become an iconic spice thanks to its balanced flavors (citrus, seaweed, chili, sansho). It’s commonly used to season noodles, rice, meats, soups and broths, offering countless culinary possibilities.
