FUTABA

Gohan no tomo, the ancestor of furikake, was invented at the beginning of the 20th century by the pharmacist Yoshimaru Suekichi who thought to solve the issue of lack of calcium due to a food shortage in Japan by grinding together fish bones and other ingredients and sprinkling the obtained powder on rice. In 1934, Futaba took over the commercialisation of this seasoning, renaming it furikake. You can find at Umami some of Futaba’s most iconic products.
