Founded in 1954, Shimodozono has struggled to make the tea produced in its region popular. Indeed, while the tea industry was still young and unpopular in Kagoshima in the 1950s, the company has worked hard to make Kagoshima tea the second most popular tea in Japan. Shimodozono uses the yutaka midori tea variety, developed in 1966 by researcher Okamura. Yutaka midori tea leaves are more fertile, can be harvested earlier, and are better adapted to the warmer, more humid climate of Kagoshima. Around 1990, Shimodozono even began to export the powerful good taste of its tea internationally, and the company continues its efforts to produce original teas through its own organic farm.
